Do You Need an IATA Licence to Sell Flight Tickets in India?
By Aniket · Founder, realtimefare
One of the first questions new travel agents ask: do I need an IATA licence to sell flight tickets? The short answer is no — not to start. Here's the full picture.
What is IATA accreditation?
IATA (the International Air Transport Association) runs an accreditation programme that lets an agency ticket directly with airlines on IATA's settlement system. It typically requires financial guarantees/bonds, a qualifying setup, and ongoing compliance. It's designed for established agencies with volume — and it's an unnecessary hurdle when you're starting out.
How new agents sell tickets without IATA
Most new agencies issue confirmed e-tickets through a consolidator or a white-label/aggregator platform that already holds the airline connectivity and (where relevant) the IATA relationship. You book through their system, the ticket is issued, and your customer gets a valid e-ticket — all without your own IATA number.
What you do need
- A registered business — proprietorship, LLP or company.
- GST registration — to invoice cleanly.
- A payment gateway — to collect from customers.
- A booking platform — the actual capability to search fares and issue tickets.
When IATA makes sense
Once you're doing serious volume and want to ticket directly with airlines, IATA accreditation can improve margins and control. Until then, it's overhead you don't need.
